Andrew Barrett does it again, or should that be he did it before? Having already read the The Third Rule and loved it, I'm now visiting some of the author's earlier works.
A Long Time Dead is a more simple story, without the political big picture of The Third Rule, and is perhaps better for it. A less than straightforward procedural thriller that explores the world of forensic science through the eyes of a Scenes Of Crime Officer, who becomes embroiled in the very crime his colleagues are investigating. I loved the detailed explanations, just enough technical information to aid understanding but without it becoming a tedious lecture. Well judged.
Sub-plots and red herrings keep the outcome under wraps until close to the end, and indeed neatly lead us into the next book in the series, which I shall be downloading in very short order. A true page turner.
I confess to being slightly muddled as the characters were introduced in the early stages, but blame that on reading whilst unwell. On the other hand, this was a great read to keep me distracted from the aches and pains.
Five stars again, and I don't give out many of those!
