This is the second in a series of novels set in an alternative history, where the country of Nova Roma, has developed out of the end of the Roman Empire and where some Roman customs prevail. The novel is however an out and out thriller and although thoroughly enjoyable, I sometimes felt that the historical elements sometimes slowed down the pace of the story with essential explanations. As a one-time archaeologist with a solid grounding in the Roman period I should imagine others might struggle.
However, putting those small reservations aside, this is a cracking and captivating read. As in the first novel, this is mostly fast-paced and compelling, with just the occasional stutter as a sub plot is resolved before the characters move on to the big picture once more.
The main player is a complex and confused individual, a strong woman in a society where women are powerful, a state of affairs which lies at the core of the book.
In general, this is a more accomplished novel than the first, Inceptio, and I will certainly be reading the next and brushing up on some Roman history in the meantime.
