Book Review: Tasting Home: Coming of Age in the Kitchen by Judith Newton

A life told, with recipes - what's not to like!

This is a thoughtfully written coming of age and beyond memoir, moving from a sugar encrusted unlovely childhood through a cream enriched discovery of love in adulthood and on via the cooking of France and Italy to the Mexican influences closer to the author's Californian home.

Newton's life has been what might be considered unconventional by many, and she has experienced more emotional strife, and needed more therapy than is perhaps usual.  All fascinating, but for me, the real interest lay in watching the change in food fashions with time and place, and how important food and cooking and the sharing of love through food are to the sense of place and the sense of home.
