Book Review: The Butterfly Effect by Julie McLaren

The Butterfly Effect is a psychological thriller about obsession and madness; Amy has a stalker, but fortunately has fallen under the protection of her boyfriend's best friend.

A number of reviewers have called this novel predictable, and the turns in the plot are indeed obvious, but I think they have rather missed the point. This is not a straightforward thriller  designed to keep the reader in the dark until all is revealed with a clever twist at the climax of the story. This is far more complex than that.

The cleverness of this writer is in developing the character of Amy as she slowly disintegrates under the horror of her situation. We are able to watch her from our own position of knowledge, as well as getting right inside her mind as she eventually begins to recognise what we already know.

Clever, sophisticated writing. Five Stars.
