Book Review: Invisible Damage by Julie McLaren
For me this is the best novel to date from Julie McLaren, she has stepped up a level with this portrayal of a woman slowly recovering from an abusive controlling relationship.
Poignant and sad, sometimes frightening, this is a well paced work of fiction, steady and measured as befits the exploration of Samantha's reconstruction of her life.
The three narrative streams give us different perspectives on her life, little insights into the control inflicted on her, the character's own blog that has allowed her to safely express herself, and the narration in the first person making the story complete.
Despite the subject matter, this is not a depressing read but it certainly is a compelling one.
Five Stars
